Be careful, I might be tricky!  Can you guess what I am?

I am all the colors of the rainbow,
waiting for my only chance to get out of this spherical playhouse.
It's finally my turn to slide and go "wheeee!"

Picked up in an 8-year-old girl's soft hand,
I am squished and flattened between her lost teeth.
Then, I get blown ...blown ....blown
When the time is right, I go "pop!"
Can you guess what I am?

If you think you know what I am, write me a note in the comments.

Haiku

Haiku poems are really easy to write.  If you want to write your own Haiku, then write a 3-line poem.  The first line is 5 syllables.  The second line is 7 syllables.  Last, the third line is 5 syllables.

Haiku Poem #1

In my slow snail shell,
I saw fog coming at me.
I was really scared.

Haiku Poem #2
Tiny green grapefruit,
I want to eat you so much!
But I have to wait.

This is my new poem.  The exercise was to use words that imitate sounds.  How did I do?

Listen!  Do you hear...
   cats meowing under the bed,
   dogs barking near the door,
   mice squeaking to be fed,
   bunnies hopping more and more?

   Turtles snapping at a bee,
   caterpillars munching on a frond,
   birds flapping in the tree,
   fish blubbing in the pond?

I had a harder time writing this poem.  I have a good idea and this is my start.  I think I still need to work on it.

Garden Rainbow
Butterflies are like tiny rainbows
that come with the breeze
showing their colors
and in the blink of an eye
they are gone.

Today I learned how to add rhythm to my poem.  Read this!  Snap along to the rhythm of the poem.  If you can't snap, ask your parents to snap for you.

In My Slow Snail Shell

In my slow snail shell
I heard munching, munching, munching
In my slow snail shell
I heard chitter, chitter, chat.

In my slow snail shell I heard
digging digging digging
In my slow snail shell I heard
pitter, pitter, pat.

In my slow nail shell I heard
Singing in the trees.
Buzzing in the breeze.
Scratching in the holes.
Dancing with the moles.

In my slow snail shell I heard
wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
In my slow snail shell I heard
splat, splat, splat.

In my slow snail shell I heard
flapping, flapping, flapping
In my slow snail shell I heard
sounds like that.

I just started a new writing unit on poetry.  Here is my first poem.

Hearing Things
In my slow snail shell
I heard munching of caterpillars eating leaves
and chitter-chattering of
squirrel's teeth on their nuts.

I just read this book and it is really good.  Go check it out at the library!

I pretended I was Matt from the book and wrote a diary entry.  I hope you like it.

Dear Diary,

I had a hard day today doing my chores.  After everything was done, I had a chance to think about my friend Attean and all the things he taught me.  Attean taught me useful things about getting food, making clothes, and finding shelter.

Thanks to Attean, I never have to be hungry again.  He taught me to catch small animals with snares.  I was very bad at first.  But I kept trying and now my snares work!  He also taught me how to make a hook out of wood.  This makes catching fish much easier.  I never have to worry about losing a hook because I can always make another one.

I am so proud of the hat I made.  I never would have been able to do it if Attean hadn’t taken me to the Indian camp.  I watched the squaws scraping skins and then using them to make things.  The hat is so warm.  I also saw they sewed with needles.  It took me a while but I figured out how to make one with an old bone, just like theirs.  Sewing the hat was hard work, but I did it.

Attean also taught me how to protect myself in a rainstorm.  You have to get a certain leaf and make a cone above you.  It will protect you from the rain like an umbrella.

I learned a lot from Attean.  I am going to miss him when he goes hunting and finds a new camp.

This is my second visit to Tanaka Farm.  I was very excited about visiting again.  Guess what?  When I was walking in the parking lot my friend passed by in her car!  It was really exciting.

The first thing we did was ride in a tractor to the petting zoo.  It was really cool.  The best and yukkiest part was when I was petting a goat, another goat pooped right in front of me!  Hee hee hee.  It was really funny.

Next was a corn maze.  We had to find our way to a flag in the middle.   Then, we had to go back around without getting lost.

Then, we rode in another tractor and picked vegetables.  I got to pick four radishes, four carrots, four onions, and four green beans.

Finally, we walked to pick the biggest pumpkin we could carry.

I really like Tanaka Farm because it is a great place.  I hope that if you haven't gone to Tanaka Farm before, you will visit and like it.

Today my art lesson was about the artist Giotto.  He was a shepherd and he liked to draw sheep.  He was different because he used light colors in the front and dark colors in the back to show depth.  He gave people expressions on their faces.

I'm very proud of my work because it took a lot of time and patience.  It was hard waiting for the different colors to dry.
